The legal tender in Hong Kong is the Hong Kong dollar (HKD).
The Hong Kong dollar is officially pegged to the US dollar at a rate of about 7.8 HKD to 1 USD, giving the Hong Kong currency greater stability.
Although the official conversion rate is pegged at about 7.8, you will receive slightly different at banks, hotels and currency exchange counters as the exchange rates may fluctuate slightly.
Also, the dollar sign "$" in Hong Kong is mostly referred to Hong Kong dollars, not US dollars.


In Hong Kong, all coins are issued by the Hong Kong Government and the issue of Hong Kong banknotes is shared between three commercial banks.
They are the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), the Bank of China (BOC), and the Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) respectively.


For exchanging money, you can exchange your currency for Hong Kong dollars at any authorized money exchanger.
In Hong Kong International Airport, there are also some currency exchange counters that are open from early morning until late at night.
However, if exchanging money in Hong Kong, it is better to go to banks as most of them always offer the best rate.
The exchange rate can vary among banks and most banks also charge some commissions.
Traveler’s cheques are also accepted by most leading banks and hotels.


International credit cards, such as American Express, VISA and MasterCard are also welcome at many shops, hotels and restaurants.
However, the best way to get cash is from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM).
Automated Teller Machine is everywhere in Hong Kong and it is the most convenient way for international credit card to obtain cash as you do not need to consider about the business hours of banks.
